This small grand has been beautifully refurbished in our shop from its case to its strings. At only 5’2” this piano still carries all the tonal power for which Baldwin is famous. It has a resonant, growling bass and a crystalline treble with a touch that is light and responsive. The action was rebuilt in our shop with Renner blue-point hammers and Renner shanks and flanges. We also added a new set of Mapes strings and regulated the action to concert specs. It is ready for performance.
We love pianos with stories to tell and this Baldwin has had some noteworthy experience. The plate features an autograph from Jose Iturbi (b. 1895 – d.1980). Iturbi was a Spanish concert pianist and conductor who appeared in a number of American films. Chances are good that he even played on this piano. When you bring this Baldwin home, you are preserving a witness to America’s rich cultural history.
“America’s Favorite Piano…” Established in 1862, Baldwin pianos quickly became one of the larger American piano makers. Many notable performers have preferred Baldwins during their careers, including Igor Stravinsky, Leonard Bernstein, and Ray Charles. Their primary manufacturing plants were located in Mississippi and Arkansas.
