If you are searching for a top-tier piano in the 5’7” range, the Bosendorfer Model 170 is at the top of its class alongside the Hamburg Steinway Model M (5’-7”), the Schimmel C169 (5’-7”), and the Steingraeber & Söhne A-170 (5’-7”).  This size (5’-7” baby grand just under 6’) has long been considered the perfect size for the home and through the years has often been called the ‘parlor grand’ or ‘boudoir room grand’ for this reason.  This piano is ideal for anyone wanting a professional level piano that fits comfortably with limited room space. Designed and manufactured in Austria, this venerable model has been in production for well over a century.

Ludwig Bösendorfer drew the first sketches of the Grand Piano 170 for the highly cultured salon society of Imperial Vienna in 1908. The result is an enchanting instrument for the private cheerful gatherings of the bourgeois, and nobility. More than a century later, Ludwig Bösendorfer’s vision and grand heritage lives on in the Model 170.  This piano represents a true Bösendorfer Sound experience with more than a century of music’s history.

This piano was manufactured in Germany in 1991 and was reconditioned in 2022 by Atlantic Music Center.  The keytops, case, and action parts on this piano are all in excellent original condition.  We replaced the strings and felts using high quality Mapes piano strings and replaced the hammers with German made Renner Bluepoint hammers. The action was expertly regulated by our shop technicians, hammers voiced, and the piano has received three tunings on our floor to insure the stability of the tunings for years to come.  The piano has been detailed, the lid, case, and all cabinetry polished, and all brass and pedals cleaned and polished to like-new condition.

The bass area of this Model 170 is harmonically rich.  Forte sections of music have a deeper quality which goes beyond simply allowing for an increase in volume.  The action on this piano is very responsive and is capable of producing extremely intricate dynamics and fast repetition of notes with ease.  These are just a few of the notable attributes that have made Bösendorfer pianos the preferred choice of some of the top pianists of all times past and present, from Franz Lizst to Oscar Peterson, to Valentina Lisitsa.

The Bösendorfer sound is usually described as darker, or richer than the sound of other pianos, such as Steinway & Sons or Yamaha.  The rim of a Bösendorfer grand piano is built quite differently from that of all other grands. Instead of veneers bent around a form, the rim is made in solid sections of spruce and jointed together. Spruce is better at transmitting sound than reflecting it.

History: Bösendorfer, one of the oldest piano manufacturers, was established in 1828 by Ignaz Bösendorfer. It has a long and illustrious history of producing highly respected instruments.  Today Bösendorfer continues to make handcrafted pianos in the same Vienna factory. Almost 300 of this premium pianos are made each year.

Ignaz Bösendorfer established his company in 1828 when he registered his business in Vienna as a piano maker. By 1859, upon his passing, Ludwig Bösendorfer furthered the company moving into larger facilities. A century later having undergone ownership changes, the company resided in the hands of Kimball Piano Company. Finally in 2008, Yamaha Corporation purchased the company. Pianos are still made in Austria and Yamaha states that they have no plans of changing production or manufacturing methods. The Conservatory Series (ending with CS) are the simpler, more competitively priced models.
